The railroad grade is located 25 m N of the plot, running subparallel to Evitts Run. There is a stand of Schoenoplectus acutus located 30 m W. Ten meters S the fen is dominated by Schoenoplectus pungens. The plot is located within the Altona Marsh TNC easment. Cattails 40 m east are a threat.;Open and sunny herbaceous community growing on peat / marl. The plot is dominated by artic rush and eastern marsh fern. The area is being actively managed for cattail by the TNC. The soil pit had buried peat making this wetland an ancient peatland.
Representativeness
Small patch of open marl fen. Plot was placed to accentuate the dominance by Juncus balticus. This is the finest stans of J. balticus in the state.
